Amprobe ACDC-400 Digital AC/DC Clamp-on Multimeter Review

I heard this thing did clamp-on DC current readings, which I did not think was possible, and sure enough it works.I have been using it once a week or so for about a year and it is accurate. All the other features work the same as any other DVM.

Fluke Corporation T5-KIT Tester Accessory Starter Kit Review

Fluke Corporation T5-KIT Tester Accessory Starter Kit

At one time long ago fluke had a t5 belt holster - it had a few problems mainly because the cables for the t5 are permanently attached to the meter (but have interchangable tips) - I like the permanent leads since noboby borrows your testleads, however on their first holster it made using the holster awkward depending on how you wrapped your cables and what probes you were using at the time. This solves that issue and better protects the parts against loss, plus there is room to store more probes if you need them in your job inside the case.If you are as careful about protecting your tools to buy this, I'll mention a trick that a general contractor friend taught me - if you work on jobsites and use your own tools - go to the hardware store and pick a marking spray paint color that stands out (like flourescent yellow, orange, or green) - spraypaint a streak on all your tools, cases, toolboxes (he even put a stripe on his ford truck) - the reason is that A) at the end of the day it makes it easy to round up your tools and not mistakenly grab someone else's and B) if someone else is borrowing your tool, it's very easy to prove ownership at a distance. You can use masking tape to design a nice long stripe on the tool body or do what he did and just spray the handles of all his tools flourescent green (pick a different color - green turned out to look pretty ugly on makita blue). You can also then mark your accessories with the same method (two wraps of tape around a probe, leave a band exposed, then spray it w/ paint, remove the tape and it's branded yours).I go the extra mile of putting my drivers license number in permanent pen somewhere on the tool body but the solvents in those marking paints are pretty good at staying bright through years of use - you can see your tools at a distance, and there is a deterrent factor as well.It may sound strange but there is no doubt this one of 5 is my 18V dewalt drill at the end of the day, and my high capacity battery someone asked to borrow when theirs died is over in another room, and I have their battery on my drill. It's well worth the price of the paint and your time and speeds up going home.

Fluke T5-1000 1000-Volt Continuity USA Electric Tester Review

Years ago, electricians carried a "wiggie" in their back pocket to check for live wires. It was nothing more than a solenoid that pulled harder depending on the voltage - you read the voltage at the tip of the solenoid plunger retarded by a spring.

Now with the T5-1000 and it's cousin the T5-600 from Fluke the world is an entirely new place. The only difference in the models is the maximum voltage (1000V on the -1000 model and 600V on the -600 model) - I bought the 1000 primarily because I was doing high power testing at 50 hz with a 5 megawat motor/generator and had to adjust the field coil in the generator with a rheostat which affected the output voltage - often it was much more than 600 volts. If you are just working around a house the T5-600 model will work fine.If you work on high power energized circuits, the 1000 is the way to go.

One feature I really liked was the ability to put a ground clip on the negative lead, tie it off to the neutral or ground bus, insert the positive lead into the T5's holder (so I wasn't holding the lead!) and then probe inside the racks I worked on.It is very ergonomic and strudy, plus the T5 body holds the probe instead of your gloved hands. All the controls work well with gloves on, and there is very little setting to deal with which simplifies life.

The "knob" sets ohms, volts, or amps. The T5 WILL NOT measure DC current, but it's simplicity in measuring AC current is much appreciated -there is no lever to open the jaws like on most amp probes.Instead you just poke the forked opening over the conductor to test, press hold and retract the assembly - the current in the wire is held in the display. This feature is much easier to use than the old "clamp on" meters.

Second, the volts setting automatically determines ac or dc for you (and indicates it in the display) - so if you are working on your car, it will show DC automaticlaly, at home, AC and you don't need to adjust the dial. That's a smart innovattion.

As for Ohms, it's meant more for the electrician who needs to ohm out motor coils and long runs of wire - 1000 ohms and less.Above 1000 ohms it shows open circuit, so just keep this in mind and have a regular meter somewhere if you need to measure high impedances.

Most of the time I toss the T5 in my tool kit because it saves space, runs a long time on 2 AA batteries, and is easy to use. It's only lacking points are low precision on voltage measurements (i.e. 12.43 VDC will show up in the display as 12VDC) and the 1000 Ohm limit. If you are aware of these limitations then it is a great jobsite meter that will keep your hands far from live circuits. The test probes are also permanently installed and made of a high voltage silicon insulation so they don't develop cracks that might otherwise fault to ground.

I'd say 90% of my troubleshooting is done first with the T5 - 9% with my 289 meter, and 1% with my scopementer.Given this, it's an excellent value.

Fluke Corporation T5-600 Electrical Tester with Open Jaw Current Review

Fluke Corporation T5-600 Electrical Tester with Open Jaw Current

(More customer reviews)
I originally bought this model based on the recommendation in the July 2005 issue of Fine Homebuilding magazine, listed as a "dependable tester."

I've had difficulty with multimeters in the past, but never with a Fluke brand multimeter.I've droped Flukes down ladders, on concrete, and they still work like a champ. They work so well and are so trusted, it's the only brand of test equipment that the U.S. military does NOT require to have regular calibrations (though Fluke does recommend an annual calibration.)

Pros:
-The best feature (for me) is that the test lead can be plugged into the back of the unit and used like a big handle. This means that you can hold the Fluke in one hand with the hot lead sticking out the "jaw" end while your other hand holds the other lead in place. No more trying to find a place for the meter to sit.

-"Slim Reach" probe tips (4mm) are flattened to allow tips to be easily inserted into outlets.Still round, but have flat sides to them.Tips are replaceable.

-Leads stow in the back of the meter.

-Audible continuity beeper is plenty loud.I've been able to hear it over engine noise.

-The "automatic" and "auto-select" features are quick.Simply select volts, stick your probes, and you have a reading within a couple seconds.

-Dust and water "resistant."(I wouldn't go swimming with it or anything.)

-Has a "low battery" indicator.

-2-year warranty.Save that receipt!

Cons:
-Pricey, when compared to other brands. But, I feel the quality speaks for itself here.

- Made in China (for those of you that want to know.)

Specifications:
Precise digital resolution to 0.1 amp, 1 ohm, and 1 volt (AC/DC.)
Uses two AA zinc chloride or alkaline batteries
Current sensor opening "jaw" = 12.9 mm
"Can stay connected much longer than solenoid type tester"

I HIGHLY recommend this multimeter for the professional as well as the do-it-yourselfer.
